The Growing World Energy Crisis

With an ever growing demand for energy outstripping supply, the world is heading for a severe energy crisis. It has always been known that our energy supply sources are not limitless, but that has not stopped us taking things for granted. Oil, gas and even water supplies are diminishing, yet we have been guilty of not taking the necessary precautions to avert the energy crisis. When I say “we”, I am not only referring to governments, but you, me, us, the common people.

Oil and gas costs are rising rapidly, and also quickly moving towards becoming extinct. Some blinkered people still believe that there is not a problem, failing to see the big picture. They conveniently seem to forget that there have been at least three major energy crises so far. The 1973 global oil crisis, the 1979 energy crisis, and the 1990 oil  price rise, let alone regional crises. Over the last five years, a shortage of energy resources coupled with increased demand, has led to a rapid increase in prices.

How soon will it be all gone?

Is the energy crisis real, or are the cynics correct in saying that there is not a major problem? Well let me tell you this. Analysts say that we have already used 50% of the available oil. At our present rate of usage, the predicted exhaustion time is 32 years! This obviously means that even the present generation faces acute shortages, given the inevitable rise in the rate of consumption.

What are we doing about it?

Are we actually ready to face this energy crisis? What can we actually do to fight it? For a start, we have to take this seriously, and understand the importance of energy in our lives. Minimizing the use of oil, gas and electricity, and cutting waste is vital to future existence. What may seem trivial actions, like switching off car engines at traffic lights and sharing car trips will have a positive long term effect.

What are the alternative energy options?

As responsible citizens, I believe that alternative energy solutions are the only way forward. Solutions such as solar energy and wind energy are not only feasible and desirable, but in most cases cost effective. Cutting energy costs, especially in the present economic climate, seems to me, to be a must. Of course, as well as cutting present costs, I believe that taking action today will help to secure a better future.
